Profile pictures for contacts from group chats are sometimes missing on Desktop #7814

Using a supported version?

  • I have searched open and closed issues for duplicates.
  • I am using Signal-Desktop as provided by the Signal team, not a 3rd-party package.

Overall summary

I'm in some groups chats with contacts that I only speak in those group chats, not one-on-one. Several of them have profile pictures set, which I can see on my phone, but not on Desktop.

  • I did not have these contacts in my contact list prior to joining the groups they are in.
  • What I see for the affected contacts is an icon with initials.
  • Refreshing contacts on Desktop doesn't help.
  • It is only affecting some group members, not all.
  • As far as I can tell the affected contacts appear to be the same ones across the two Desktop clients I've linked.
  • I haven't observed this problem in group chats with people that I also have one-on-one conversations with.
  • I'm using the Android client on my phone.

Steps to reproduce

  • Join a group chat.
  • Look at the group chat both on your phone and on Desktop.

Expected result

Users with a profile picture have it both on phone and Desktop.

Actual result

Some group members' profile pictures aren't shown on Desktop. Instead, an icon with their initials is shown.
