There is historical context for "evil". See evil mode for emacs. It used to be that RMS referred to himself as Saint Ignucius of the Church of Emacs, and this turned into several Epistles and made it into public presentations, where the gag was that vi (roman number VI being 6) represented the mark of the best. Hence, vi binding mode in emacs was called evil. So this is just a nod to that, I presume. Also worth noting. "evil" puts the "vi" in "el" as in between e and l. Which is the file extension for emacs lisp. |

I couldn't have described it better. :)
Initially, "evil-helix" was just the first name that came to my mind, but as I went "public" with the fork, people didn't seem to dislike it.
As time is passing, more people are using evil-helix and we even got two new packages/package maintainers. Therefore, I don't think we'll rename it, as a rename could cause confusion & frustration.
(Also, I confess: There was a time where I sinned in thought and deed... I used Emacs.)
